Northern Ireland BRCA Regional Round 1

Sunday 28th May 2006 saw the North West Model Car Club host round two of the BRCA regional championship.

Run to 19T rules this was one of the few opportunities for all the regions club drivers to pit their wits against our 3 BRCA F1 drivers. A 27T class is also contested to ensure everyone can take part.

A great days racing was had by all with some of the closest racing seen round the Ballymoney track in a few years.

Adam Wilson's excellent days racing was rewarded with a superb win in the B final (obviously pleased with his new Pro 4) from Race Controller Martin Kenny (thanks for looking after race control all day Marty - but was there some trickery going on to get that 2nd place??). Third went to Gary Wilson ( I'm sure he let Adam win!!)

The A final was a real treat with the 19T motors and fast flowing track proving a great leveler for all competitors. XRay A team driver Mark Gilliland won the first leg of the A final after a mistake from Associated driver and pole man Alan Bickerstaff let him through after about 3 minutes of nose to tail action. Michael Todd in his Evo 4 MS finish a close 3rd, while drive of the day had to go to Stephen (its the best car I've ever driven) Coyle finishing 4th with his Losi JRXS - a podium can't be far away.

The second leg saw Alan and Mark edge out a lead over Michael and Graham Kenny, finding some form after his poor first leg. That was the way it was to finish with Alan and Mark finishing a split second apart after 5 minutes of racing with less than half a second between them.

Tied on points after two legs, Alan got the overall win as he had secured pole position, and now leads the championship by 2 points from Mark, Michael a further 2 points back in 3rd, ahead of 4th placed Andrew Rennick by another 2 points - anything could happen at Round 3 hosted by the UMCC at Sprucefield.

Magic Memories

  • Alan Bickerstaff and Mark Gilliland's second leg of the A final - there was nothing to choose between them.
  • Stephen Coyle's 5th place overall - definitely Driver of the Day.
  • The smile on Johny Dunne's face when he put his new Checkpoint Money Motor on the track in his XRay T2 - I'd prefer not to say who he pulled out and passed on the straight!!
  • "Superman" Scott Molloy who fell off the top of the rostrum - after a bit of a scare he was ok, and I am reliabily informed was back at school on Monday. Hope you managed to get that bit of Chocolate Cake when you got home Scott ;-)

Scott after his accident - will be back to do battle at the UMCC next Sunday.
